They might be doing the movements, but they are not doing Tai Chi. Tai Chi is flexible - that is...robotic. No, that is not Tai Chi.

Ah yes, I see more and more sentiments wondering about the genuine nature of Taijiquan.

Perhaps the pendulum swings back to a martial nature in Taiji.
Hehe...now I'm remembering the first time I practiced simhasana: It was in your class at the American Fork, Junior High. I remember well the nervous giggles and outright laughter!

I love introducing this pose to students: I always give them a demonstration first and there are always giggles and covered mouths. Of course there is also always a little "horror" that I'm about to have the whole class do the same thing! The horror quickly turns into more giggles and laughs though.

Of course, one good way to add a bit of humor when in a group/class is with simhasana (lion pose). Honestly, even in my private practice I can't help but giggle a little afterward.

Comment on Psychotic Episode Associated With Bikram Yoga — Am J Psychiatry by Tyran

I can see Bikram's instructor courses triggering such an episode but a trigger is not, as you rightly point out, the root cause of the problem. I would say I'm surprised except that it was a letter to the editor and not a peer reviewed paper. I am sure that such a conclusion (Yoga makes people psychotic) would never survive peer review.
