Reminders

prayatna shaithalya ãnantya samãpattibhyãm

Âsanas become perfected by relaxation of effort, and meditation on the infinite.

-the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, 2.47

  • Before beginning a new Yoga posture, make certain you are completely focused on your body. If ANY move seems too difficult for your current physical state, you do not have to perform it. If any posture, movement, or activity hurts to perform, STOP what you are doing and assume a neutral position.
  • Inform the instructor of any injury, however minor, which may cause discomfort during your yoga practice. Any injury or discomfort which occurs as a result of yoga practice should also be reported. In both cases, minor adjustments to your posture by your instructor should alleviate any discomfort.
  • Never bounce into a stretch. Bouncing tears muscles and damages tendons. Always relax and gently pull into a stretch.
  • Keep your back straight, aligned with your head and neck.
  • Breathe out on a forward movement, or when you bend forward. Breathe in on a backward movement, or when you stretch backward. Breathe steadily when holding a posture.
  • Wear loose and comfortable clothing. Keep your eyes closed to maintain inner calm. If you wear glasses take them off.
  • Do not practice Yoga on a full stomach. It's better to have at least one hour between the time you finished eating, to when you begin your practice.
